On the eve of Zaega's launch...I can't help but feel the butterflies in my stomach. I've spent the past 20 years working in the beauty industry for a string of companies in Minneapolis including Aveda, with a couple of years in Chicago. As a cosmetic chemist, I spent the early 90's whipping up shampoos, conditioners, body washes -you name it, until I made the move into marketing. While working at Alberto Culver in Chicago, I'll never forget the look on one chemist's face when I suggested she include a natural colloidal gum to help stabilize an emulsion which was separating. I don't think a brand manager has ever uttered those words before. So, I bit my lip to keep the peace and secure my spot in marketing vs R&D. Eventually, however, my two passions for marketing and R&D were allowed to merge.
Now, after spending the last 10 months writing business plans, developing a brand and creating partnerships and a website, I'm poised to launch my very own company. Jitters and visions of the joys and disappointments that await me as a business owner are racing through my head and my gut. But, I really can't wait. I can't wait to turn the page to tomorrow to see what happens next. Staying in the moment has never been my strong suit. Maybe that's why I finally feel most happy today, as an entrepreneur. Eventually, I hope that the butterflies disappear and that my vision takes off like a rocket.
