While the summer sun is breaking temperature records, sunscreen protection is top of mind; but did you know that there are other things besides sunscreen that we should also be thinking about in order to keep our skin healthy and prevent premature aging?
What’s sugar got to do with my skin? There’s a proven connection between sugar consumption and premature aging, but before you tune out (for fear I’ll tell you to lose your secret stash of chocolate), keep in mind that moderation is always the key. Here’s one simple and small change you can make this summer to keep your skin healthy.
Tip #1: Choose water instead of sugary drinks when out in the sun. Glycation happens in our skin when we consume sugary, starchy foods, or anything high in fructose (like the corn syrup in your cola). The sugar reacts with the collagen fibers in our skin, hardening them and making the skin less able to snap back. And, that looks like deep wrinkles and sagging skin, which nobody wants.
Protect yourself inside & out. We’re all prone to multiple aggressors which can cause premature aging, especially in summer when we leave our skin exposed to the elements. In addition to wearing sunscreen and eating a diet of low glycemic (low sugar) foods, we need anti-oxidants to combat free radical damage and anti-inflammatory ingredients to maintain skin integrity.
Tip #2: Protect yourself from premature aging by using skincare products that contain a variety of water and lipid soluble antioxidants and anti-inflammatory actives. Skin aging is a complex process –there’s hundreds of damaging chemical reactions which combine to break down our skin’s structure and cause premature aging. Combat this complex chain of reactions, by choosing products formulated with a blend of several potent anti-aging actives. Remember: anti-inflammatory = anti-aging.
Tip #3: Summertime is the best time of year to find a variety of antioxidant-rich fruits & vegetables. Shop your local farmers market and indulge in fresh, organic antioxidant-rich foods including blueberries, raspberries and spinach.
Tip #4: Natural supplements can also pack a powerful dose of antioxidants, as well as provide Omega 3 fatty acids, which are proven to reduce inflammation on a cellular level. These powerful nutrients are broadly anti-aging, and that includes your skin too. Zaega recommends clinically-proven Immuno-Viva® Boost (water soluble flour of black raspberry and black cumin seeds) and Immuno-Viva® Core (cold-pressed oil of black raspberry and black cumin seeds), which delivers the antioxidant equivalent of 16 pounds of berries in a single teaspoon, and also contains both Omega 3 & 6 essential fatty acids.
Enjoy the outdoors, and be sure to remember the formula for “good sense” summer skincare:
Sunscreen + Anti-Oxidants + Anti-Inflammatories (– Sugar)
= Good Sense Summer Skincare
