Chances are over the past couple of years, you've heard reports in the media about lead in lipstick and carcinogens in baby products. But, what you may not be aware of is the debate raging within the personal care industry regarding what's true, and what's misleading or scaremongering.
It's clear there are two camps -those that support the platform of the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and Environmental Working Group and those that support the cosmetics industry. It's a classic "they say, we say", "we're right, they're wrong" debate. At the heart of it all is proposed legislation introduced this summer, The Safe Cosmetics Act of 2010.
What's got me going recently is that some people on both sides seem to be so angry and so interested in their own opinions and agendas, that the truth -and the innovative thinking that leads to real progress -has been lost.
You as a consumer should care about this debate, because you are the one who is losing.
To my industry friends and colleagues (no matter what side you are on), we are failing if we can't stop the bickering and start working together on rigorous and transparent scientific studies that provide us all with real facts. From there, we can develop a sustainable plan for developing not just safer, but better performing ingredients and products. Step one is to check the egos at the door and get input and involvement from the most knowledgeable and experienced scientists around the world, who have to date been silent for fear of being shot in the crossfire!
We know what you want -it's the same thing I want, and I hope what the rest of the industry wants -the truth!
"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts." -Abraham Lincoln
